Points of Interest in the Upper Town
The four areas of the upper town that are particularly worth seeing include: (a) the section at the eastern point, (b) the section near Hagia Sophia, (c) the section around the large cisterns, and (d) the section near the citadel at the summit of the rock.
The sketch indicates the location of these four sections of the plateau, and also shows the pathways that can lead us to each of the areas.
Beyond the structure of the main gate a small path leads along the ramparts of the upper town's fortification to the large cisterns. Another route leads northward up a small, steep way to the Hagia Sophia. To the east, behind the eucalyptus trees, a third path winds in and out among the ruins along the edge of the cliff, leading to the eastern point of the plateau. The ramparts form the southern edge of the main square of the upper town. Beyond the fortifications we can have a wonderful view of the church cupolas, the tiled roofs, and the sea below.
